My work ranges from smaller everyday pieces to heirloom‑level customs, and some JuJu have sold ranging from $600-$1000 – so you’re investing in a true one‑of‑a‑kind art piece for your body.
This necklace is made with durable, waterproof cord, so you can wear it daily and don’t have to baby it. That said, to keep your JuJu looking its best, I recommend:
- avoiding harsh chemicals and perfumes directly on the stone or cord
- rinsing with fresh water after ocean or pool wear
- storing it somewhere safe when you’re not wearing it

Tourmaline belongs to a complex group of borosilicate minerals, celebrated for their remarkable diversity of colours, chemical compositions and crystal formations. Commonly found in granite pegmatites and other geological environments, Tourmaline crystallizes in the trigonal crystal system, frequently forming elongated, prismatic crystals with distinctive vertical striations.
Its chemical composition is particularly fascinating, as different elements can substitute within its crystalline structure, contributing to its extraordinary range of colours and mineral species.
Tourmaline can be found in nearly every colour imaginable, including black, green, pink, blue, purple, yellow, brown and spectacular combinations of multiple colours within a single crystal.
Notable localities include Brazil, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Madagascar, Namibia, Nigeria, Mozambique and the United States.
Tourmaline also possesses remarkable electrical properties known as piezoelectricity and pyroelectricity, allowing it to develop electrical polarization in response to mechanical stress or changes in temperature.
These properties have contributed to Tourmaline's scientific importance and its historical reputation as an unusual and fascinating mineral.
Of all the minerals I have worked with, Tourmaline is one that I associate most strongly with transformation, inner strength, restoration and the journey toward wholeness.
Its extraordinary diversity reminds me of the complexity of the human experience, and how beautifully different expressions of creation can emerge from variations within the same fundamental structure.
TRANSFORMATION & WHOLENESS
There is something particularly profound about Tourmaline's symbolism of transformation.
Throughout our lives, we experience circumstances that influence how we perceive ourselves and the world around us. We develop habits, fears, expectations and protective behaviours, sometimes without realizing how deeply they have shaped our identities.
In my personal experiences with Tourmaline, I have often associated this mineral with the feeling of returning to oneself. Not necessarily becoming someone entirely new, but rediscovering aspects of ourselves that may have become hidden beneath years of conditioning, hardship, fear or insecurity.
I find this symbolism particularly beautiful when contemplating the individuality of God's creation.
Each of us possesses a unique combination of gifts, experiences, characteristics and potential.
Much like Tourmaline, whose remarkable diversity emerges from variations within its crystalline structure, we are each wonderfully complex.
In Christian theology, transformation is about the renewal of our hearts and minds as we grow in wisdom, faith and understanding.
Tourmaline reminds me that the journey toward wholeness often requires us to confront what has wounded us, recognize what no longer serves our wellbeing and rediscover the person we are called to become.
Healing means growing into a wiser, stronger and more compassionate version of ourselves. We do not have to returned to who we once were in order to be "healed".
ENERGY & PURIFICATION
Tourmaline has long been celebrated in modern crystal traditions for its associations with protection, purification and the transformation of negative energy. One of its most fascinating physical characteristics is its ability to develop electrical charges through mechanical stress or temperature changes.
Historically, Tourmaline's electrical behaviour attracted scientific curiosity, particularly its ability to attract small particles after being heated. Although these physical properties do not give a definitive that Tourmaline can absorb emotional negativity or spiritually cleanse its surroundings, they offer a fascinating natural foundation for contemplating polarity, change and transformation.
I have always thought of Tourmaline as a symbolic energy recycler.
A reminder that difficult experiences, painful emotions and challenging circumstances do not necessarily have to define the direction of our lives. We can learn from hardship, develop resilience and transform our responses to the world around us. Purification is also a recurring theme throughout Scripture, often associated with renewal, refinement and the removal of what prevents us from living in truth.
Just as precious materials may undergo extraordinary geological processes before revealing their beauty; personal growth often requires patience, pressure and transformation.
Tourmaline beautifully reflects this ongoing process of renewal.
SCHORL: PROTECTION & BOUNDARIES
✧ PROTECTION ✧ STRENGTH ✧ DISCERNMENT ✧ GROUNDING ✧
Schorl is the black, iron-rich species of Tourmaline and one of the most abundant members of the group. It commonly forms opaque black prismatic crystals, ranging from delicate individual specimens to enormous crystalline masses.
Black Tourmaline is perhaps the most widely recognized protection stone in modern crystal traditions.
Its dark appearance and strong crystalline formations evoke feelings of stability, resilience, security and personal strength.
I have always associated Schorl with the importance of establishing healthy boundaries.
There are circumstances in life when we find ourselves surrounded by conflict, overwhelming responsibilities or difficult relationships. During these experiences, we may become so concerned with the emotions and expectations of others that we neglect our own wellbeing. Schorl reminds me that compassion does not require the abandonment of personal boundaries.
We can love others without accepting mistreatment, offer support without carrying every burden and remain kind without surrendering our discernment.
In Christian teaching, we are called to love our neighbours while also exercising wisdom in our relationships and decisions.
Protection can mean developing the strength to remain grounded in our values, even when our circumstances become challenging.
For those navigating difficult environments, Schorl can serve as a meaningful physical reminder of courage, discernment and the importance of safeguarding one's peace.
RUBELLITE: LOVE & EMOTIONAL RESTORATION
✧ LOVE ✧ COMPASSION ✧ TENDERNESS ✧ GRACE ✧
Rubellite is the name commonly given to richly coloured pink to red Tourmaline, usually belonging to the elbaite species.
Its beautiful rosy hues have inspired longstanding associations with the heart, emotional tenderness and unconditional love. Of all the varieties of Tourmaline, I have found Pink Tourmaline to possess an especially comforting character.
As a woman, I find wearing my Pink Tourmaline necklace remarkably soothing. There is a softness about this mineral that reminds me of a much-needed exhale after carrying emotional burdens for too long.
Its delicate colours evoke feelings of compassion, femininity, affection and emotional openness.
I also associate Rubellite with the process of nurturing the parts of ourselves that have experienced rejection, disappointment or emotional hardship. Sometimes difficult experiences cause us to become guarded, making it challenging to receive affection or express our feelings openly.
Yet love requires a certain degree of vulnerability.
To remain tender in a world that can sometimes be unkind is its own expression of strength.
In Christian theology, love is among the greatest virtues, and compassion is central to how we are called to treat one another.
Pink Tourmaline reminds me of the gentle strength of forgiveness, the importance of emotional honesty and the comfort found in God's enduring love. Its beautiful rosy appearance also inspires thoughts of the tenderness associated with Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the many women throughout Christian history whose devotion has reflected extraordinary courage, compassion and grace.
Rubellite represents the beauty of a heart that remains open to love, even after experiencing pain.
VERDELITE: VITALITY & PERSONAL GROWTH
✧ GROWTH ✧ VITALITY ✧ RENEWAL ✧ TRANSITION ✧
Verdelite is the name commonly used for green Tourmaline, frequently belonging to the elbaite species.
Its colours range from pale, delicate greens to rich forest and emerald-like hues, making it a beautiful representation of life, renewal, nourishment and the natural world.
I have always associated Green Tourmaline with the relationship between our physical wellbeing and our emotional state. Its colours remind me of fertile soil, growing plants, flourishing forests and the extraordinary processes that sustain life on Earth.
In my personal experiences, Green Tourmaline has often accompanied periods of change, encouraging me to reflect on my habits, routines and physical wellbeing. I remember finding particular comfort in Green Tourmaline while grieving the loss of my cat, Charlie, in early 2023.
During that difficult time, I associated the mineral with the quiet strength required to continue tending to ordinary responsibilities while processing loss.
I have also noticed that when working with Green Tourmaline, I often become more conscious of my food choices, daily activities and the importance of caring for my physical body.
Green Tourmaline reminds me that caring for the body is an expression of gratitude for the life we have been given.
Our bodies are part of God's creation, sustained through the nourishment of the Earth, movement, rest and countless biological processes.
The symbolism of Green Tourmaline encourages me to recognize that spiritual growth and physical wellbeing should no be separate pursuits. We are living beings, participating in the natural world through both our bodies and our minds. Sometimes growth requires us to abandon unhealthy habits, embrace new responsibilities or develop the discipline to make meaningful changes.
Renewal often begins with the smallest decisions, repeated faithfully over time.
WATERMELON TOURMALINE: BALANCE & HARMONY
✧ WHOLENESS ✧ HARMONY ✧ LOVE ✧ UNITY ✧
Watermelon Tourmaline is a beautifully colour-zoned variety of Tourmaline, typically displaying a pink or reddish interior surrounded by a green outer layer. This remarkable formation occurs as changes in the mineral's growth environment influence the distribution of colouring elements within the crystal.
Its appearance offers one of the most beautiful natural representations of harmony between our inner and outer lives.
The pink interior reminds me of our emotional world: our feelings, memories, relationships and the deeply personal experiences we carry within ourselves.
The surrounding green evokes our physical existence and our relationship with the natural world.
Together, these colours create a beautiful symbol of the relationship between emotional wellbeing, physical health and spiritual wholeness.
We are more than our bodies, though we are also deeply affected by our physical experiences. Our thoughts, emotions, relationships and physical circumstances continually influence one another.
Watermelon Tourmaline reminds me of the importance of nurturing each aspect of our lives with patience and compassion.
There is also something particularly beautiful about its symbolism of love and family.
The joining of pink and green inspires thoughts of affection, nurturing, growth and the relationships through which life is sustained.
True harmony is not the absence of difficulty, but the ongoing effort to care for the different parts of ourselves and the people entrusted to our love.
INDICOLITE: TRUTH & EMOTIONAL WISDOM
✧ TRUTH ✧ INTEGRITY ✧ COMPOSURE ✧ WISDOM ✧
Indicolite is the name given to blue Tourmaline, most commonly a variety of elbaite, occurring in shades ranging from delicate blue to deep, oceanic tones.
I have always associated Blue Tourmaline with emotional maturity, integrity, composure and honest self-expression.
There is a certain nobility about this mineral. Its beautiful blue colours remind me of deep, peaceful waters: calm on the surface, yet possessing extraordinary depth beneath.
Where Pink Tourmaline evokes tenderness and emotional comfort, Indicolite reminds me of the strength found in emotional stability and responsible leadership.
I often associate this character with the virtues of a loving father: protection, patience, honesty, dependability and compassion. These are qualities that can be deeply meaningful to those who have experienced the absence of reliable emotional support.
Indicolite reminds me that strength doesn't require emotional suppression.
One of the greatest expressions of maturity is showing vulnerability by openly understanding our emotions without allowing them to control our actions.
There is tremendous wisdom in knowing how to speak truthfully without cruelty, express vulnerability without shame and offer guidance without arrogance.
In Christian teaching, truth and love are intended to work together.
Honesty without compassion can become unnecessarily harsh, while compassion without honesty may prevent meaningful growth.
Blue Tourmaline symbolizes the beautiful balance between these virtues.
It reminds me of the importance of speaking with integrity, listening with patience and exercising wisdom in our relationships.
DRAVITE: SELF-ACCEPTANCE & INNER RESTORATION
✧ ACCEPTANCE ✧ REFLECTION ✧ COURAGE ✧ WHOLENESS ✧
Dravite is a brown, magnesium-rich species of Tourmaline, commonly occurring in earthy shades of brown, amber and occasionally very dark green.
Its warm, grounding colours evoke thoughts of soil, roots, stability and the hidden processes through which life develops.
Dravite is a mineral I strongly associate with self-examination, emotional honesty and the courage to confront our hidden wounds.
In psychological discussions, the term shadow work is often used to describe the process of recognizing aspects of ourselves that we may have suppressed, rejected or struggled to accept. I find this concept particularly meaningful when considering the relationship between self-awareness, personal responsibility and spiritual growth.
Throughout our lives, we may develop behaviours intended to protect us from rejection, humiliation or emotional pain. Some of these behaviours may have served a purpose during difficult circumstances, yet become obstacles as we mature.
Dravite reminds me that growth often requires us to examine these patterns with both honesty and compassion.
We cannot meaningfully change what we refuse to acknowledge.
In Christian theology, self-examination is an important part of repentance, renewal and the pursuit of wisdom. To acknowledge our shortcomings is not to condemn ourselves, but to recognize our need for growth, forgiveness and grace.
There is a profound difference between taking responsibility for our actions and allowing shame to become our identity.
Dravite represents the courage to confront difficult truths about ourselves without losing sight of our inherent dignity as creations of God.
We do not need to be perfect to feel whole.
We must practice honesty, humility and display a willingness to grow.
THE VIRTUE OF TOURMALINE
Tourmaline represents transformation, protection, self-discovery, emotional restoration and the journey toward wholeness.
Its extraordinary diversity reminds us that creation is filled with individuality, complexity and beauty.
Much like the many colours of Tourmaline, our lives contain different experiences, emotions, challenges and opportunities for growth. Each contributes to the unfolding story of who we are and who we may become.
Recognize the gifts God has placed within you.
Have courage in the face of change.
Protect your peace without closing your heart.
Embrace compassion without abandoning discernment.
Examine your wounds with honesty and grace.
Nurture your body, mind and spirit.
And remember that transformation is often a lifelong journey.
"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind."
Romans 12:2
A symbol of transformation, inner strength, protection, compassion, renewal, divine grace and the beautiful journey toward wholeness.
