Ammonites were an extinct group of marine molluscs belonging to the cephalopods, relatives of squids, octopuses and nautiluses.

Their name derives from Ammon (Amun), an ancient Egyptian deity associated with ram's horns, which resemble the distinctive coiled shape of their shells.

Unlike minerals that crystallize directly from geological processes, Ammonites were once living creatures. Their fossilized remains offer a remarkable glimpse into the ancient oceans and the extraordinary history of life on Earth.

ANCIENT LORE & CHRISTIAN HISTORY

Ammonites have inspired human curiosity for centuries.
Pliny the Elder described objects known as Ammon's horns, named for their resemblance to the curled horns associated with the Egyptian deity.

During medieval times, Ammonite fossils became the subject of fascinating Christian folklore in England.
According to legend, Saint Hilda of Whitby, a seventh-century abbess, transformed troublesome snakes into stone through prayer. The spiral fossils discovered along the Yorkshire coast became known as snakestones, and some were even carved with serpent heads to resemble the creatures of the legend.

These traditions reflect humanity's enduring fascination with fossils and the mysteries hidden within the Earth.

ANCESTRY & THE PASSAGE OF TIME

Of all the fossils I have encountered, Ammonites inspire some of the deepest reflections on ancestry, inheritance and the passage of time. Their beautiful spiral formations remind me of the generations that have come before us, each contributing to the unfolding history of life. Consider the countless ancestors whose lives, relationships, hardships and achievements ultimately made our own existence possible.

We are each the continuation of a remarkable story extending far beyond our individual lifetimes.

Ammonites remind me of the importance of understanding our roots, honouring our ancestors and appreciating the experiences that have shaped our families.

In Scripture, genealogies serve as powerful reminders of lineage, inheritance and God's unfolding providence through generations.

TRANSFORMATION & PERSONAL GROWTH

The spiral shape of Ammonites has long inspired associations with transformation, growth and the cycles of life. I find this symbolism particularly beautiful because Ammonites themselves represent an extraordinary transformation: a living creature whose shell becomes preserved within the Earth, carrying evidence of its existence across time.

Their fossilized remains remind us that life is continually shaped by change. Our experiences, relationships and circumstances influence our understanding of ourselves, encouraging us to recognize patterns and develop greater wisdom. Ammonites symbolize the importance of examining our personal history, understanding the influences we have inherited and choosing how we wish to grow.

The past offers lessons that can enrich our present and guide the legacy we leave behind.

ABUNDANCE & DIVINE PROVIDENCE

Ammonites also inspire contemplation of the incredible abundance of life throughout Earth's history.
These creatures inhabited ancient oceans, participating in ecosystems that existed long before humanity appeared. Their fossils offer a beautiful reminder of the richness and complexity of God's creation.

I find their symbolism especially meaningful when considering divine providence and the many circumstances that contribute to our existence. Every generation inherits something from the one before it, whether through knowledge, traditions, relationships or the natural resources of the Earth.

Abundance is reflected in the countless gifts we receive through creation and the opportunities we have to nurture them for future generations.

Ammonites remind me to appreciate the blessings of the present while remaining mindful of the legacy we are creating.

THE VIRTUE OF AMMONITE

Ammonite represents ancestry, transformation, gratitude, divine providence and the enduring beauty of life's unfolding history.

Honour the generations that came before you.
Reflect upon the experiences that shaped your life.
Embrace growth with patience and wisdom.
Recognize the abundance of God's creation.
Cultivate the gifts you have inherited.
And consider the legacy you wish to leave behind.

"One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts."
Psalm 145:4

A symbol of ancestry, ancient wisdom, transformation, divine providence, abundance and the beautiful continuity of creation.
