Serpentine is the name given to a group of magnesium-rich silicate minerals, typically occurring in shades of green, yellow-green and brown. Its earthy colours and often serpent-like patterns have made it a natural symbol of the living world, transformation and renewal.
Virtues & Lore
To me, Serpentine is deeply connected to nature, movement and transformation. It evokes the untamed parts of the natural world; the earth beneath us, plants and animals, changing seasons and the continual cycles of growth, decay and renewal.
Like a snake shedding its skin, Serpentine reminds us that transformation sometimes requires letting go of what we have outgrown. Old beliefs, habits and ways of understanding ourselves may once have served a purpose but eventually become too restrictive for the person we are becoming.
For this reason, I associate Serpentine with periods of profound inner change, particularly those times when life seems to dismantle what was familiar before revealing what comes next. What may feel like an ending can also become fertile ground for regeneration.
Serpentine also carries a strong sense of vitality and movement. I associate it with reconnecting to the physical experience of being alive: walking through nature, dancing, creating, exploring and allowing the body to move freely. There is an almost primal quality to it; a reminder of the inner flame that persists even after difficult periods.
Above all, Serpentine speaks to me of life's cycles. Nature continually demonstrates that growth is rarely linear. There are seasons of flourishing, seasons of loss and seasons when something new quietly begins beneath the surface.
It is a stone of regeneration - a reminder of the transformative power of experience, and that sometimes we must reach the bottom before discovering our way back to the top.
A beautiful symbol of transformation, resilience, vitality and renewal.
