Mimetite is a lead arsenate chloride mineral belonging to the apatite group. It commonly forms in brilliant shades of yellow, orange and golden brown, although other colours can occur. Its crystals may appear as small hexagonal prisms, rounded barrel-like formations, globular aggregates or delicate crusts.

Because Mimetite contains both lead and arsenic, specimens should be handled responsibly. Avoid ingestion, grinding or creating mineral dust, and wash your hands after extensive handling.

To me, Mimetite represents movement, newness and the willingness to explore possibility.

NEW BEGINNINGS

There are periods in life when we know something needs to change but become overwhelmed by the size of the change itself.

Sometimes we spend so much time considering every possible outcome that we never actually begin. Mimetite reminds me that a new beginning does not require knowing exactly where the path will lead.

Sometimes it simply requires enough courage to take the first step. Movement creates new information. We learn by beginning.

ADVENTURE & CURIOSITY

Mimetite has always felt particularly adventurous to me. Its brilliant yellow and orange formations evoke excitement, curiosity and the feeling of discovering something new. Adventure doesn't necessarily require travelling to far away places. We can have a spirit of  adventure within our day to day lives.

Take the class. Learn the instrument. Try the food. Visit the place. Start the project. Read about something you know nothing about. Talk to someone different from you. Change your routine.

Curiosity keeps life expansive.

There will always be things we have not learned, places we have not seen and abilities we have not yet discovered within ourselves.

THE CAN-DO ATTITUDE

One of my favourite virtues of Mimetite is simply:

CAN-DO ATTITUDE.

We may not be capable of accomplishing absolutely anything we imagine, so we will underestimate what is possible before trying.

“I don't know how” does not necessarily mean “I can't learn.”

Sometimes confidence does not appear before we begin something new.
But, confidence can be built through attempting, possibly failures, making adjustments and discovering what we are capable of.

SELF-CARE & MOVEMENT

Mimetite also reminds me that caring for ourselves sometimes requires participation.

Rest is important, but so is movement. There are times when self-care looks like sleeping, becoming quiet and allowing ourselves to recover. Other times it looks like getting out of the house, moving our bodies, making something, seeing friends, changing our surroundings or finally beginning the thing we have been postponing.

THE VIRTUE OF MIMETITE

Mimetite represents the excitement of possibility becoming movement.

We don't need to have every answer before beginning. We don't need to wait until fear disappears. And we don't need to remain permanently committed to a path simply because it was the first one we chose.

A symbol of adventure, movement, curiosity, fresh perspectives and the courage to begin.
