Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral instantly recognizable by its extraordinary bands and swirls of rich green. Its patterns record successive layers of mineral growth, creating formations that can resemble eyes, rings, waves and landscapes.

Because Malachite contains copper, care should be taken with dust produced through cutting or grinding it. Historical use of powdered Malachite does not mean we should recreate ancient cosmetics at home.

For me, Malachite represents transformation through getting to the root of something.

ROOT CAUSES

One of the strongest ideas in my relationship with Malachite was that it encouraged me to ask why rather than continually placing a bandage over a problem.

When something repeatedly appears in our lives, addressing only the immediate symptom may provide temporary relief without changing the underlying pattern.

Why does this keep happening? What am I avoiding? What belief is influencing this decision? What part of this situation belongs to me? What am I afraid will happen if I change it? What evidence am I ignoring? Sometimes the answer is external. Sometimes it is internal. Often it is complicated.

But transformation becomes possible when we become willing to investigate.

Malachite reminds me:

Don't just ask what is happening. Ask why.

TRANSFORMATION & ACTION

Understanding the root of something is only part of transformation.
Eventually, knowledge asks something of us. Action.

I have always associated Malachite with those periods when we become frustrated because we are waiting for our circumstances to change while continuing to make the same choices within them. Not everything in life is within our control. But something usually is; Initiating a conversation. Expressing a boundary. Making a decision. Continuing a habit. Giving an apology. Trying something new. A willingness to ask for help.

Malachite reminds me to distinguish between what I cannot control and what I have simply been afraid to change.

Insight without action can become avoidance.

PROSPERITY

Malachite's extraordinary green colour has also long made me associate it with prosperity.

Prosperity can include financial stability, but also opportunity, knowledge, meaningful work, creativity, healthy relationships and the ability to use our resources wisely.

Malachite reminds me that prosperity usually requires participation. We can hope for opportunity while also preparing ourselves to recognize and act upon it when it arrives.

HISTORICAL LORE

Malachite has been used by human beings for thousands of years.

In ancient Egypt, Malachite was ground into a brilliant green pigment used in painting and cosmetics. Green held powerful associations with vegetation, life and regeneration in Egyptian culture, and Malachite itself became connected with ideas of renewal and the divine.

The Egyptian afterlife was even sometimes imagined through imagery of a fertile “Field of Malachite,” reflecting the relationship between brilliant green colour, vegetation and renewed life.

Malachite was also carved into ornaments and decorative objects throughout the ancient Mediterranean world.

Centuries later, the stone acquired a particularly strong reputation as a protective material in Europe. Amulets of Malachite were traditionally worn or given to children as protection against danger and misfortune.

Its swirling concentric patterns sometimes resemble eyes, making it easy to understand how Malachite became incorporated into traditions of protection against the evil eye.

I find that history particularly fascinating because two of Malachite's enduring historical themes, transformation and protection, remain among the ideas I independently came to associate with it through my own experience.

I simply find it interesting that people separated by centuries have looked at the same mineral and sometimes found similar human ideas reflected within it.

THE VIRTUE OF MALACHITE

Malachite reminds me that transformation requires more than wanting life to be different. We must become willing to look beneath the surface.

It requires the courage to choose, the humility to learn and the willingness to change direction when truth demands it.

Find the root. Face the truth. Make the change.

A symbol of transformation, discernment, leadership, responsibility and the courage to act.
