Jasper is an opaque, typically patterned material composed primarily of microcrystalline quartz and occurs in an extraordinary variety of colours and formations.

Across its many varieties, Jasper has always represented the Earth to me.

It is one of the mineral families I most strongly associate with embodiment: being present within the physical world, attending to what is directly in front of us and developing the endurance necessary to participate fully in life.

Jasper reminds me that not every form of growth requires transcendence.

Sometimes we need to come back down to Earth.

To work.
To build.
To move our bodies.
To solve the problem.
To keep our commitments.
To spend time outside.
To finish what we started.

There is something deeply spiritual to me about simply showing up for the life we have been given.

BIBLICAL LORE

Jasper holds a particularly beautiful place within biblical gemstone symbolism.

In the Book of Revelation, jasper appears repeatedly in descriptions of the heavenly realm. The One seated upon the throne is described as being “like a jasper and a sardine stone” in appearance (Revelation 4:3, KJV).

Later, the New Jerusalem is described as having the glory of God, its light compared to “a jasper stone, clear as crystal” (Revelation 21:11). Jasper also appears in the city's wall and is named as the first foundation stone (Revelation 21:18–19).

I find the imagery particularly meaningful because Jasper has always represented earth, stability and foundation to me and Scripture places a stone translated as jasper within the very foundations and walls of the Holy City.

There is also an interesting gemological mystery here. Modern Jasper is generally opaque, while Revelation describes its jasper as “clear as crystal.” Ancient gemstone names do not always correspond perfectly with the mineral classifications we use today, so we cannot assume the biblical stone was identical to what a modern mineral collector would call Jasper.

Rather than diminishing the symbolism for me, that uncertainty makes it even more fascinating.

Whatever exact material the ancient writer had in mind, Jasper was chosen to communicate something precious, radiant and worthy of the glory of God.

MOOKAITE

Mookaite is a colourful silicified sedimentary material found in Western Australia, particularly associated with the Mooka Creek area. Its earthy reds, yellows, creams and browns have always made it one of my strongest symbols of connection to the natural world.

Mookaite represents instinct and practical intelligence.

Modern life gives us access to extraordinary amounts of information, but information does not automatically produce wisdom.

Sometimes we can analyze something so extensively that we become disconnected from what is directly in front of us.

Mookaite reminds me to return to basics.

What do I actually know?
What resources do I have?
What does experience tell me?
What is within my control?
What is the next practical thing I can do?

Mookaite represents resourcefulness, adaptability and the ability to respond intelligently to our circumstances.

I also associate it with the balance between God's will and human free will.

Faith does not absolve us of responsibility for our choices. We can seek God's direction while still recognizing that we have been given minds, abilities and judgment that we are responsible for using.

Mookaite reminds me to trust God while still participating in the path before me.

A symbol of instinct, resourcefulness, nature and practical wisdom.

OCEAN JASPER

Ocean Jasper is a trade name for colourful orbicular chalcedony material from Madagascar, known for its remarkable circular patterns, contrasting colours and complex formations.

Its patterns have always reminded me of worlds within worlds.

Ocean Jasper has me contemplating mystery.

The ocean itself contains enough mystery.

Much of it remains difficult for humans to access directly. Its enormous depths contain environments and organisms dramatically different from those we encounter on land.

Ocean Jasper reminds me that the world is much larger than the portion of it I personally experience.

DEPTH & GRIEF

I have also long associated Ocean Jasper with grief and emotional depth.

The ocean provides a powerful metaphor for emotion.

At the surface, water can be restless and turbulent. Deeper down, entirely different conditions exist.

Grief can feel similar. What appears outwardly as sadness may contain love, anger, memory, regret, gratitude and longing beneath it.

I once described Ocean Jasper as transforming grief into creative expression.

I still believe there is something meaningful in that idea.

Art does not erase grief, but human beings have always found ways to make something from what hurts; a song, painting, poem, story, prayer or act of remembrance.

Creation can give form to something we otherwise struggle to express.

A symbol of depth, mystery, grief, imagination and creative expression.

Red Jasper represents strength without urgency.

It has always felt mighty yet gentle to me.

I don't associate it with frantic motivation or the pressure to constantly accomplish more. Instead, it represents the quieter strength required to consistently show up.

There is no need to become everything today.

Train.
Practice.
Work.
Rest.
Return tomorrow.

Over time, those ordinary repetitions become strength.

That is why I have always associated Red Jasper with physical activity, creative projects and long-term goals. It reminds me that accomplishment is often much less glamorous than inspiration makes it appear.

Discipline is deciding what matters and continuing to show up for it.

EMBODIMENT & SENSUALITY

I also continue to associate Red Jasper with sensuality.

To me, sensuality is broader than sexuality. It is the experience of inhabiting a physical body: movement, touch, strength, attraction, music, food, warmth, pleasure and the senses through which we encounter the world.

Our bodies are not obstacles preventing us from having a spiritual life.

They are part of the life we have been given.

Red Jasper reminds me to care for my body, appreciate what it allows me to experience and become more confidently present within it.

People often become attractive when they become comfortable being themselves.

SHOWING UP

What is important enough in your life that it is worth showing up for?

Love requires showing up.
Friendship requires showing up.
Faith requires showing up.
Art requires showing up.
Our responsibilities require showing up.

Red Jasper represents the personal strength required not merely to know what matters, but to organize our lives accordingly.

UNAKITE

Unakite is an altered granitic rock composed primarily of green Epidote, pink Feldspar and Quartz. Although commonly grouped with Jaspers in the crystal trade, it is not technically a variety of Jasper.

Unakite represents slow, persistent growth.

Deep change usually takes time.

We rarely become different people through one enormous revelation.
More often, change happens through repeated choices.

Recognize the pattern.
Choose differently.
Fail.
Try again.
Learn.
Continue.

I have always considered Unakite a stone of persistence and longevity, and that remains one of its strongest virtues for me.

Anything worth having is often worth working toward patiently.

Growth does not become meaningless simply because it is slow.

Unakite reminds me that truth-seeking also requires endurance. Sometimes discovering that we were wrong is itself part of getting closer to what is true.

Yellow Jasper represents finding lightness without denying difficulty.

Humour has an extraordinary place within human resilience.

Sometimes circumstances are genuinely painful and nothing about them needs to be minimized. Yet even during difficult periods, a ridiculous moment, a joke between friends or the ability to laugh at ourselves can briefly remind us that suffering has not consumed everything.

Sometimes joy and sorrow can coexist.

Yellow Jasper represents the ability to continue noticing what is beautiful, funny, absurd or worth enjoying even while life remains imperfect.

Resilience is not denial.

A symbol of optimism, humour, endurance and the determination to keep finding reasons for joy.
