Hanksite is an unusual sodium-potassium sulfate-carbonate-chloride mineral found in evaporite deposits, most famously at Searles Lake in California. Its crystals are often pale yellow to colourless and can form beautifully transparent hexagonal prisms.

Hanksite is soluble in water, so specimens should be protected from moisture. That physical characteristic has become particularly meaningful to me because Hanksite has always made me contemplate cycles, impermanence and the nature of letting go.

CYCLES & IMPERMANENCE

Everything within creation exists within cycles.

Things form.
Things change.
Things dissolve.
And from changing conditions, something new eventually emerges.

Hanksite reminds me that permanence is not a requirement for something to have value.

There is beauty in things precisely because they exist within time.

I associate this mineral with becoming more comfortable with the reality that life continually asks us to release what we cannot keep exactly as it was.

FORGIVENESS

Hanksite has also always represented forgiveness to me.

Forgiveness does not require pretending that something never happened, nor does it necessarily mean restoring a relationship to what it once was.

Sometimes forgiveness simply means refusing to remain permanently imprisoned by an injury.

Like Hanksite itself, which can dissolve when its environment changes, some things in our lives are not meant to retain their original form forever.

We can acknowledge what happened, learn from it, establish whatever boundaries are necessary and still choose not to carry bitterness indefinitely.

To me, that is a form of release.

LIFE, DEATH & GRIEF

Hanksite also makes me contemplate one of the most difficult cycles we encounter: life and death.

Grief cannot simply be cleansed away.

When we lose someone we love, moving forward does not mean erasing them, forgetting them or pretending that their absence no longer hurts. Grief becomes part of the evidence that someone mattered to us.

I believe that physical death is not the final passage.
I believe that death is actually something for us to look forward to on a soul level, an invitation to life lived eternally with God.

Hanksite therefore reminds me simultaneously of mortality and hope; the reality that earthly life is temporary and the faith that death does not have ultimate victory.

TRUTH & AWARENESS

Sometimes we already know what is weighing on us.

A relationship has become unhealthy.
A habit needs to change.
Something needs to be forgiven.
Something needs to be grieved.
Something has ended that we are desperately trying to keep alive.

The difficult part is often not discovering the truth.

It is accepting it.

Hanksite represents the courage to look honestly at what has reached the end of its season and ask what we are being called to release, preserve, forgive or carry forward differently.

THE VIRTUE OF HANKSITE

Hanksite reminds me that letting go is not the same as declaring something meaningless.

Some things remain with us through memory.
Some remain through what they taught us.
Some require forgiveness.
Some require mourning.
And some simply reach their natural conclusion.

Life continues to move through seasons of beginning, growth, loss and renewal.

For me, Hanksite represents learning to move through those cycles without denying either the sorrow of what has passed or the possibility of what may still come.

A symbol of impermanence, forgiveness, grief, acceptance and hope beyond endings.
