EPIDOTE PROPERTIES

Epidote is a calcium aluminium iron silicate mineral, typically occurring in shades of pistachio green to deep green, brown or nearly black. Its name derives from the Greek epidosis, meaning “increase” or “addition,” referring to a characteristic feature of its crystal form.

To me, Epidote represents a simple but powerful idea:

What we continually feed tends to grow.

I have long associated Epidote with enhancement. I once understood this as a kind of energetic magnetism; the idea that Epidote could attract more of whatever was already present in someone's life.

Today, I find the underlying principle much more interesting.

What receives our attention, time and repeated action often becomes more established. Encouraging patterns can become stronger through practice, while unhealthy patterns can also become increasingly difficult to ignore when continually repeated.

Epidote therefore reminds me to ask: What am I reinforcing?

PATTERNS & CHANGE

Sometimes a pattern must become obvious before we are finally willing to change it.

For this reason, I associate Epidote with self-awareness rather than judgment. Recognizing something in ourselves that needs improvement is not inherently negative; it gives us information with which we can make a different choice.

Epidote represents the moment when recognition becomes action.

A new direction requires more than wishing for a different outcome. Whether we are pursuing a creative project, changing a habit, building a business or working toward a personal goal, progress requires participation.

I strongly associate Epidote with motivation, perseverance and optimism; the belief that change remains possible, coupled with the willingness to actually work toward it.

ABUNDANCE

I once described Epidote as a stone of attraction and manifestation, particularly in relation to abundance and prosperity.

What remains meaningful to me is the relationship between possibility and responsibility.

Abundance can take many forms: knowledge, opportunity, friendship, creativity, love, purpose or material prosperity. But recognizing an opportunity and participating in it are two different things.

Epidote reminds me that wanting something does not dismiss my responsibility to take action.

We cannot control every circumstance or guarantee every outcome. We can examine what we repeatedly cultivate through our attention, habits and choices.

Feed curiosity, and knowledge can grow.
Feed a skill, and ability can grow.
Feed a relationship, and connection can grow.
Feed resentment, and resentment can grow too.

That is the “magnetism” I now see in Epidote.

A symbol of enhancement, self-awareness, action and taking responsibility for what we choose to cultivate.
