I have fondly called Dumortierite “The Wizard's Stone” since my earliest experience working with it. During quiet contemplation with the mineral, I had a vivid image of a wizard standing before a mirror resembling a portal. His message was simple: “You're exactly where you need to be.”

That experience shaped much of what Dumortierite has come to symbolize for me.

I associate it with our strange relationship with time and the extraordinary capacity of the mind to move beyond the immediate moment. Through memory, feeling and the senses, we can revisit experiences from our past; through imagination and vision, we can contemplate possibilities that have not yet occurred. And yet, despite our ability to look backward and forward, we remain physically rooted in the present.

Dumortierite reminds me that our present circumstances are not necessarily evidence of failure simply because they differ from what we once envisioned. We can acknowledge where we are while still possessing the ability to choose, create and move forward.

The Wizard represents mastery: learning to recognize and wisely use the knowledge, creativity, talents and tools we have already been given. These abilities accumulate through experience, requiring patience and maturity before we fully understand what we are capable of.

To me, Dumortierite ultimately carries a simple reminder: you are here now; and from here, possibility remains.
