Datolite is a calcium boron silicate hydroxide mineral that occurs in a variety of crystal habits and colours, from colourless and white to pale green, yellow, pink and other subtle hues.

To me, Datolite represents the seemingly contradictory relationship between presence and possibility.

There is value in learning to be present; to recognize what already exists, what we have survived, what we possess and what there is to be grateful for right now. But accepting the present does not mean believing that the present is all there will ever be.

Datolite reminds me that our current circumstances are not necessarily our final circumstances.

I associate it strongly with hope during periods when the future seems limited. When we feel trapped by what currently exists, it can become difficult to imagine anything beyond it. Datolite represents lifting our eyes from the immediate situation long enough to remember that life contains possibilities we cannot yet see.

This is where I once associated Datolite with manifestation. What continues to resonate with me is not the idea that imagining something magically causes the universe to deliver it, but the importance of having a vision for our lives. We must be capable of imagining a possibility before we can intentionally begin moving toward it.

At the same time, vision requires self-awareness. What do I actually want? What matters to me? Where am I trying to go and are my choices moving me in that direction through God?

To me, this is also where liberty enters Datolite's symbolism. We can become imprisoned by assumptions about who we are, what our lives must look like, or what is possible for us. Sometimes freedom begins simply by recognizing that the story we have accepted about ourselves is not the story that God has written.

Datolite reminds me to appreciate what is here without losing sight of what could be.

To remain grateful without becoming complacent.
To remain hopeful without abandoning reality.
To imagine without mistaking imagination for action.
And then, when a possibility matters enough, to begin moving toward it.

A symbol of hope, liberty, self-awareness and the extraordinary number of possibilities contained within a human life.
