Bismuth is a metallic element that occurs naturally, although the spectacular rainbow-coloured, stair-step crystals most commonly seen today are generally grown by people from melted bismuth. Their geometric hopper formations and brilliant iridescence make them some of the most unusual specimens in the mineral world.

To me, Bismuth is a symbol of creative problem-solving.

I associate it with those situations that seem to have reached an impasse, when the obvious solutions have already been exhausted and another way forward must be imagined. Sometimes overcoming an obstacle requires looking at the same pieces differently rather than simply trying harder at what has already failed.

In this sense, Bismuth represents alchemy: the ability to transform a difficult or stressful circumstance into something constructive through creativity, ingenuity and a willingness to change our approach.

It is also strongly associated with artistic inspiration for me. Bismuth encourages experimentation, healthy risk-taking and the willingness to try something unfamiliar. Change does not necessarily mean abandoning everything we have already built; sometimes it means growing upon the foundation that has already been laid.

Its extraordinary geometric structure feels especially fitting for this virtue. Step by step, one level becomes the foundation for another.

Bismuth reminds me that when an old way of thinking no longer works, we are capable of reconsidering the problem, rearranging the pieces and building something new.

A symbol of ingenuity, transformation, adaptability and finding another way forward.
